Workshops on Opportunities in Geoscience and Geotechnology
February 14 - February 16
Preface: German – Brazilian Year of Science, Technology and Innovation 2010/11
Important topics of this bilateral scientific cooperation are sustainability and the careful approach to environmental, energy, and raw material resources. Regarding these questions both countries facin the same challenges. But Brazil has enormous natural resources like oil, gas, and ore deposits. Furthermore, it has great possibilities to use energy sources e.g. solar, and hydro power. In contrast, Germany has advanced equipment and machines for the raw material production and is one of the leading countries for renewable energy technology. The workshop will be carried out to bring German and Brazilian experts on marine geology, and geotechnology from universities, research centers, and the industry together.
The participants are invited to exchange knowledge, indentify complementary concepts and technologies and to formulate the framework for a future dialogue on geoscientific research and resources between Germany and Brazil. In the future, Brazilian mining/oil companies need to revert to reservoirs whose sustainability and ecological exploitation will depend strongly on secure and efficient technical solutions. In addition, great challenges can be expected by the production of oil and gas in the deep ocean along the coastline of Brazil especially to produce, transport and convert environment friendly. The protection of the environment is of importance beyond country borders.
Concept: Workshops on Opportunities in Geoscience and Geotechnology
The objective of the workshop is the outline of joined research topics for future activities and research cooperations between Brazilian and German scientist in different research fields like »Marine Geosciences and Geotechnology«, »Geophysics and Geodesy«, and
»Scientific Drilling«. Renowned scientist and representatives from the industry are invited to discuss these topics, the possibilities for cooperation and the need for further joint research. During the workshop the integration of know - ledge on science and technology of both countries in the future will be aspired.
The workshop is scheduled as a platform to initiate cooperative research between Brazilian and German scientists and companies supplying technology and innovation in geoscientific fields for the future. Beside scientific talks and discussions a poster session and an exhibition will be organized. Exhibitors and sponsors are welcome to inform and display their technologies and products.
The proposed workshop will provide the platform to gather experts from both countries to discuss joint research projects including joint development of marine technologies. The results will be summarized in a »white paper«. Combining scientific researchers with representatives from the industry supplying marine technologies will have a direct and lasting impact on the near future of joint scientific research. The short- and long-term impact can only be sustained if the outlined research goals by the proposed workshop can be supported by solid financial tools (programs) in both countries.
To strengthen the discussion on future cooperation work between Brazil and Germany a second workshop is scheduled from March 27-30 in Heidelberg and at different German Marine Institutes for invited speakers.
